Yonta is a beautiful young woman growing up in the city of Bissau a generation after her nation has gained independence. She develops a secret crush on Vicente, a good friend of her parents and a hero of their country's struggle. Meanwhile, Yonta herself has a secret admirer, a shy young man name Zé who sends her love letters copied from a Scandinavian book (hence, her "beautiful blue eyes"). Gomes' film is a lovely, delicate work about youthful illusions--both personal and national--that powerfully demonstrates the director's talent for eliciting wonderfully nuanced performances from his actors.

In Oluchi Onweagba's mother tongue, her first name means "God's work." We certainly have to agree for two reasons: 1) Who are we to dispute the translation? And, 2) just one look at her and you'll reaffirm your belief in whichever god you're partial to. While some models are so thin they pull muscles just picking up an apple, watching the curvy Oluchi strut her long legs on the catwalk is one reason to not anxiously search for the remote when you happen upon the fashion channel. With her 6'2" frame, we imagine a night out with Oluchi would involve doing whatever the hell she wanted. We're OK with that.

Christabel Momodu is Black and Beautiful

I never heard of her until I came to Lagos last August and saw her photographs in the new Supple magazine and I was impressed. But when she came to say hello to the Publisher and Managing Editor, I did not pay attention to her, because I was very busy. Then when she came around again, I had time to talk to her.

Christabel is tall, dark and lovely and a beauty queen in Lagos. She understands English, French and Yoruba and some Igbo and Hausa.
She has been the only female I welcome to sit and chat with me in the office and seeing her on the cover of Allure magazine of The Vanguard newspaper in Nigeria was cool as she came yesterday looking like she just stepped out of the cover of Vogue, in long wavy black har and tight fitting black skirt. She interrupted my work, but I did not mind.
I gave her my popular love book before she left and I am looking forward to seeing her again.
Christabel is an epitome of beauty with dignity.

Miss Africa Denmark 2008

Miss Africa Denmark 2008 June 14th 2008 we will for the third time crown a Danish Miss Africa. The show and afterparty is at Store Vega, the main music venue in Copenhagen.

The Miss Africa event (including this site) is in Danish, but it will be an entertaining evening, also for those who are not speaking the language. This page serves as a brief introduction in English.

The jury for 2008 is Caroline Henderson, Malkit Singh, Miss Mukupa, Lassina Badolo, Toniah Pedersen and Peace Kabushenga.

Purpose and idea
The overall purpose of the Miss Africa Denmark event is to gather all interested Africans, Danes and other friends of Africa in a celebration of the beauty and rich diversity of African culture. African culture has a lot to offer – also here in the Nordic countries. All Africans residing in Denmark has been asked to participate and we hope the event will be backed up by all.
It is important to note that Miss Africa DK is NOT a traditional model- or beauty contest. Miss Africa is an ambassador of diversity and a positive rolemodel. She helps extend peoples knowledge of Africa, and she bridges Danish and African culture. Miss Africa has something at heart and her positive personality voices the causes that she is passionately committed to.

Through the last year our winners from 2006 and 2007 has been interviewed in Danish media several times as a representative for the African community in Denmark.
Any profit from the event is donated to a specific project for "Save the Children" in Gulu, Uganda. The organisers and performing artists affiliated with Miss Africa Denmark all work for free.

Linda Ikeji, one of the few Nigerian celebrity bloggers and the youngest female publisher of a fashion and society magazine in Africa, has released the second edition of her trail-blazing Fashion, Modeling and Beauty (FM&B) magazine. She told me the good news today and has posted it on her popular blog, Linda Ikeji .

The FM&B magazine will be available at all the leading retail stores and bookshops in Nigeria. Linda Ikeji is already working on having the magazine on Amazon for online orders.
