Physical attraction in human romance is mostly based on physical beauty.
How we look either attracts or puts off others.

The natural attraction and selection of the opposite sex begins at puberty when we become conscious of the individuality and sexuality of our personality. We begin to attract or solicit attention for relationship and companionship.

Our choices are often based on physical attraction normally determined by our perception of beauty and humans fall into two opposite categories of those we see as beautiful or handsome and those we see as ugly, which in biology does not depend on us, but on nature, since no human has any choice on how, when and where to be born or who should give birth to it. So, we are either born pretty or ugly without our knowledge or consent. And we end up in a world that has already decided to appreciate and favour those who were lucky to be born pretty and to discriminate and make jest of those we were unlucky to be born ugly and would need make up, make over or plastic surgery to correct whatever makes them “ugly”.

I believe that the human perception of human beauty has been determined by how humans look different from other creatures in the animal kingdom. So, any human who unfortunately has similar facial features with an ape, monkey or dog is seen as ugly and that is why the first sight of blacks by whites affected their perception of Africans who they see as looking as similar as monkeys and apes, because of their bolder facial features of broad noses with flared nostrils and dark skin. They did not waste time in addressing blacks in the derogatory terms of “black monkeys” or “apes” and called them ugly until they saw blacks who had facial features similar to their own white Caucasian features of aquiline noses and narrow lips and with fair skin. Therefore over the centuries of western invasion, occupation, domination and imposition of their civilization in Africa, they have made their own Caucasian perception of human beauty the standard world view of beauty which they have drawn, written, photographed and recorded in print and electronic media of modern education for general information in their own nations and the colonies. They have miseducated and misinformed their black colonial subjects and victims to accept this erroneous and ambiguous perception of beauty and made the blacks to use it to define and judge themselves. So, the closer a black person looks like a white person, he or she is seen as beautiful or handsome, but the farther the looks are in contrast to Caucasian features, the black person is seen as ugly!

The current perception of African beauty has been influenced and defined by Western Caucasian views as we have been seeing in the selection of the majority of the winners of African beauty pageants.

We have seen majority of black girls and women who prefer to look like the page three models in American, European and Asian tabloids and those parading on the red carpet in Hollywood or at beauty pageants. Weave on is now a must have by most black girls in Africa and in the Diaspora and they also do skin wash, bleach or tone their dark skin in their attempts to look as fair as mulattoes or white women.

To be obese is now ugly to an African girl! But not so to African mothers who still insist that a typical African beauty must look plumb, well fed and not looking like someone on hunger strike! No native African mother would watch and bear her daughter suffer from the Anorexia nervosa (AN) afflicting many girls in the western world who are obsessed with looking like the malnourished models on the runways of Paris and Milan.

The news media in both the print and electronic channels seem to be the amplifiers of Western Fashion Products and services who are making billions of dollars from selling beauty products based on Caucasian standards of beauty.

The hair weave business in Africa is flourishing, because every African girl wants to have long wavy hair like the white girl they see in newspapers, magazines, on TV and on the internet, etc.

Look at every copy of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit calendars and there is little or no difference between the white models and the black models. The only distinction is the dark skin of the black models, but they are the same with the white ones in physiognomy and anatomy.

Africans have accepted the Caucasian definition of beauty and use it in their choices of friends, lovers and spouses. The closer a black girl looks like a white girl, the more attractive she is to the black guys and in fact, they go gaga over how heavenly she looks and compose love poems and songs in eulogies of the aesthetics of her beauty. We see the examples of this perception in majority of the music videos of African singers and musicians showing African or black girls and women looking like white girls. This African admission and submission to the Caucasian definition of beauty has made Africans to feel and look inferior in comparison to white people and only increases the ego of white superiority complex in their relationship with blacks.

Most black guys want their black girlfriends or wives to look like the white beauties.

Magnificent African beauty Miss Angola Leila Lopes on Tuesday was crowned Miss Universe 2011 in a star-studded ceremony in Brazil's Sao Paolo. India's hopes were dashed early into the competition's final rounds after Indian contestant Vasuki Sunkavalli failed to make it to the top 10.

Born in Benguela, Angola Lopes is a business management student in Great Britain, where she was crowned Miss Angola UK on October 8, 2010.

Lopes, who stands 1.79 m (5 ft 10 1⁄2 in) tall, competed as one of 21 finalists in her country's national beauty pageant, Miss Angola, held in Luanda on December 18, 2010,where she obtained the Photogenic Award and became the eventual winner of the title, gaining the right to represent Angola in Miss Universe 2011.

Lopes is the fourth African woman to win the title, the last African who won is Mpule Kwelagobe, Miss Universe 1999 from Botswana.

The Top Baby Names of 2010 Revealed

LONDON, December 31, 2010/PRNewswire/ -- Katie and Amy have fallen out of the list of the top 20 female christian names, it emerged yesterday (30th January 2010).

The monikers of troubled stars Katie Price and Amy Winehouse have been replaced by prettier and less infamous names, Maisie and Isabella.

The highest climber in the list of the most popular girls' names in the UK today is Bella, due in no small part to the lead character in Twilight, played by actress Kristen Stewart. Lacey, as in EastEnders actress Lacey Turner, is also on the up, soaring from number 57 up to 37. Florence is also becoming increasingly popular, moving up 33 places, as is Maisy.

Olivia is still top after 3 years and Sophie is still second. Lily is now third, up from 8th place, with Emily and Ruby completing the top five.

In the boys list Jack has finally been bumped off top spot by Oliver after 16 years in first place. Jack is now second while Harry, Charlie and Alfie, all non-movers, make up the top five.

Another bad year for F1 ace Lewis Hamilton has seen the popularity of his first name drop from 13th to 19th place, whilst his singer girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger fares even worse, with the name Nicole dropping seven places down the girls list to 84th place.

Ollie emerged as the biggest climber - up 56 places to number 53 - while Zachary, perhaps inspired by High School Musical's Zac Efron or even the son of jungle queen Stacey Soloman, has also become more common.

Bobby - the name of the late Jade Goody's son - is another big climber, up 25 places to number 70. And Kai - Coleen and Wayne Rooney's son has stepped up 10 places to number 56, despite his father's indiscretions.

The list was compiled by parenting club Bounty from names given to 423,000 children born in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland during 2010.

Yesterday, Faye Mingo, spokeswoman for bounty.com (http://www.bounty.com/) said: ''Our records show that parents are continuing to be influenced by popular culture and celebrity trends.

"The remarkable rise in popularity of names such as Ollie and Florence are most probably due to the X Factor star Olly Murs and the singer from Florence and the Machine experiencing their time in the limelight.

"However, parents are looking to a wide range of sources for influence and also seem to be rediscovering more traditional, 'old-fashioned' names like Ava and Stanley which have been more associated with grandparents in the past.

"Biblical names are also proving popular with Noah rising 20 places to 15th place and Jacob up 7, just missing the top ten."

Olivia is enjoying its third year in top spot after deposing Grace in 2008.

Jessica climbed one place to sixth, while Chloe dropped from fifth to seventh. Ava made it into the top ten for the first time while Grace slipped to ninth from sixth.

Amelia completed the top ten. Lucy was a non-mover at 13 while the next four places were all taken up by new names, including Isabella which climbed eight places to 14th.

Megan, Isla and Freya have all become more popular as has Lilly, most probably inspired by the singer Lily Allen.

On the boys list Jack finally surrendered top spot to Oliver but very little of the rest of the top ten changed. William climbed one spot to eighth as did Daniel to ninth while James slipped two to tenth.

Other names we will be hearing more regularly includes Logan, which climbed seven places to 17th and Oscar, which moved up four to 22nd.

Callum and Liam seem to have had their day - they were the biggest fallers in the top 30, seven and nine places respectively.

And new entries into the bounty.com top 100 lists were Esme, Courtney, Jude, Elliot and Stanley.

Faye Mingo added: "A recent study we ran found that one in five parents regret the names they have chosen for their children, so it's more important than ever for parents to choose a name them and their child will love for the rest of their life.

"It's hard to predict what we'll see next year but it's most probable that celebrities and popular culture will again play a part - and with a royal wedding on the horizon we may well see an increase in Williams and Kates born in celebration!"

I never heard of her until I came to Lagos last August and saw her photographs in the new Supple magazine and I was impressed. But when she came to say hello to the Publisher and Managing Editor, I did not pay attention to her, because I was very busy. Then when she came around again, I had time to talk to her.

Christabel is tall, dark and lovely and a beauty queen in Lagos. She understands English, French and Yoruba and some Igbo and Hausa.
She has been the only female I welcome to sit and chat with me in the office and seeing her on the cover of Allure magazine of The Vanguard newspaper in Nigeria was cool as she came yesterday looking like she just stepped out of the cover of Vogue, in long wavy black har and tight fitting black skirt. She interrupted my work, but I did not mind.

Purpose and idea
The overall purpose of the Miss Africa Denmark event is to gather all interested Africans, Danes and other friends of Africa in a celebration of the beauty and rich diversity of African culture. African culture has a lot to offer – also here in the Nordic countries. All Africans residing in Denmark has been asked to participate and we hope the event will be backed up by all.
It is important to note that Miss Africa DK is NOT a traditional model- or beauty contest. Miss Africa is an ambassador of diversity and a positive rolemodel. She helps extend peoples knowledge of Africa, and she bridges Danish and African culture. Miss Africa has something at heart and her positive personality voices the causes that she is passionately committed to.

Through the last year our winners from 2006 and 2007 has been interviewed in Danish media several times as a representative for the African community in Denmark.
Any profit from the event is donated to a specific project for "Save the Children" in Gulu, Uganda. The organisers and performing artists affiliated with Miss Africa Denmark all work for free.

Ms. Stewart completed her degree in Consumer Science and Merchandising at the University of Houston. The 47-year-old Katoucha Niane, known as the "Black Princess" had been missing from her home on a central stretch of the river since the night of February 1, 2008.

"JJ": The Masked Fashion Designer

one of the most mysterious figures in fashion at the moment. Designer Jonathan 'JJ' Hudson never shows his face to an audience and always wears a surgical mask to hide himself from photographers. He rarely speaks to the press and has never been known to do an interview....so just who is he and where did he come from?

His Myspace page indicates that Hudson is 31 and originates from Aberdeen...but that's about it. He's been around in the fashion business for almost a decade now and his label is well known all over the world.

'JJ' as he is known to his friends started out as an MTV presenter and music industry stylist before he discovered a passion for customised vintage clothing.

Hudson is a deep thinking and eccentric character who described his inspiration last season as “A need to see extreme modernist design to counterbalance the corporate retro overload.” He also describes his occupation as “slaughterhouse”, and says “the New York Slasher” is his hero.

Fun Fearless Male of the Year

During the years when you weren't getting a lot of work, did you consider giving up and trying something different?

I never knew what else I could do. I left school when I was 17, and now I play a neurosurgeon, which is scary. Years ago, I did a movie, With Honors, which was filmed at Harvard, and I would sneak into classes all the time. I would listen to people, and I would hang out with all of the students so I could be like, "I didn't miss anything." I think not finishing high school has always made me work harder.

ER alums Noah Wyle and Anthony Edwards are both married to makeup artists. What is it with guys on hospital shows falling for women in the beauty industry?

Well, I think it's because they understand the business, but there's no competition. Two actors together is very difficult. I can work with an actress and have great chemistry with her, but I'd never want to be married to one.

You started off playing nerds, and now you're the biggest hunk on TV. Which of your characters do you most relate to?

I relate to my Can't Buy Me Love character in that I went from geek to chic. It took a while for me to mature into Derek Shepherd...to grow into a nurturer, a sensitive guy. He's the idealized version of a man. I don't think I'm as good a person as Derek is.

Can you be friends with your exes?

No. I've never been friends with an ex.

What's something that people say is different about you when they meet you in real life?

Sometimes people say I look different in real life than I do on film. I don't know if that's true, but I'm certainly shorter than I seem on TV.

What words do you live by?

"Live in life, live in the dream." That's become a mantra for me.

Is there something you wish you knew at 20 that you know now at 40?

Fame is completely fleeting. I had no clue when I was starting out. I was kind of a ditz.
What's the downside of fame? I've been in the business for over 20 years, and I just don't trust people easily. You have to earn that right with me. People who wouldn't take my calls a year ago suddenly are calling me. So I'm wary. I'm cautious. I always feel like I have to protect myself.

Do you have a bad habit that only someone who loves you would put up with?

I'm incredibly moody. And I think that's probably the hardest thing about me to deal with.
What's the best gift you've ever received from a woman? My wife enrolled me in a three-day ski competition class, which reignited my desire for ski racing. But the most amazing present was the E-Type Jag she gave me two years ago for Christmas.

You're really into car racing. How did that start?

My dad was always into cars. We would watch the 500 together, so it's an important race for me. Car racing is about all I do with my downtime. I don't have time for anything else.
Where are you happiest? I'm really happy being home in Maine, where I have a farm. I just want to be running around the fields with enough money to live on. So my goal is to live there permanently. The older I get, especially being a dad, the more I just want to be living in the middle of nowhere. I just want to go back to living in the country.

At only 24 years, Lanky, Linda Ekeji is already stepping down from the run way to help other models realise their dream . The English graduate of the University of Lagos, took to modeling at only 17 featuring in some of the most glamorous fashion shows in the country. Talk about St Moritz Style Selection, she was there. She has also been to ECOFEST and done several out door advertisements. The CEO of Black Dove, a modeling agency in Yaba is all set to launch a magazine FM&B to help the industry she is so passionate about. At her Yaba office during the week, the young executive opened up on why she is retiring very early and her seven years experience in modeling.

“Well, the truth is that you can’t do one thing for the rest of your life. I started modeling very early in life in 1998. By 2004, I realised that most of the people I modeled with had all moved on. Some had gotten married and some had left the country. I got tired of doing shows with new people. Some of these young models were coming to me to help them realise their dreams. So, I spoke to some people in the agency and they said they will support me. That was how I started Dove Modeling Agency.

Challenge
I do not find the young models a challenge or a threat. I did Frank Oshodi’s Red Bold and Jazzy last year. I didn’t see anyone that would make me feel like I wasn’t good enough. I don’t think we’ve been able to breed a new set of fantastic models. My set was probably the last set of good models. I’ve been to shows and the new generation models aren’t doing too much fantastic jobs. Like I said, I retired because, I look around and I’m wondering, what am I doing here? All the people around me are all 18-19 years old and I’m 24. So, I felt it was time for me to move on, help others and be in the background.

Life after modeling
The age at which you retire, depends on how early you started. I started at 17years immediately I got out of secondary school. I was modeling with people much older than me. So it’s not about age but about the number of years that I’ve spent in the industry. You don’t have to retire at the same age as me. You can go on modeling for as long as you feel comfortable doing it. I know a model who got married in June and in July, she did a show. So, its not about your age, it’s about you and your passion for the job. I probably would still do a fashion show depending on who the designer is and how much they are paying me.

Best show
So far, my best show was the ECOFEST show organisd by FADAN at Asaba. It was one show where I got to meet a lot of people like John Fashanu and the late First Lady. We were there for almost a week and had a lot of fun. I also remember St Moritz Style Selection 2001. I had a good time because immediately after the show, people were calling me for interviews and I was like, why? and I was told that I was really outstanding. I think another show that I enjoyed was the Silverbird International fashion show that featured the then Miss World at Abuja. Those were great times for me.

Fashion in Nigeria
I thought 3-4 years ago, that by now, we would have gone beyond this stage. Instead the opposite is the case. I’m sorry to say that we are static. Designers aren’t doing their best. They are waiting for when V-mobile or any corporate organization who don’t even have the time to organise a show so that they can come and showcase their designs. It’s not the best. If I were a designer, I’d probably have 2-3 shows every year. About three to four years ago, Dakova used to have at least 4-5 shows every year. He doesn’t do that anymore. We used to participate in his shows and those he was invited to and they were almost every month. In fact, I feel sorry for upcoming models now because there’s no show for them now. When I was modeling, I was going to Abuja at least once every two months. Government was having programmes in which they incorporated fashion shows and FADAN especially came to showcase and the president and other heads of government will be there. I don’t think they do that anymore. Since the change of leadership in FADAN, fashion has gone down and it is their role to promote fashion in Nigeria. If they are not doing it, who will? When Mrs Alakija was president, they had shows regularly. I was modeling for designers from the North—Kano, Jos etc. They don’t do that anymore. So I think FADAN has to do something. They don’t have to wait for any corporate organisation before they can showcase what they have. In Europe and America, when a designer has a new collection, he calls journalists and a few members of the public to show case what he has for that season. Here, they don’t take a cue from what is obtainable abroad. It’s bad. But I think with time, things will improve. That’s why some of us are still in this country to help shape things.

Magazine
I’m planning to launch a magazine called FM&B. It will help the fashion, model and beauty industry in Nigeria. I realise while writing for celebrity magazine that many young girls and boys from the ages of 18-25 are fascinated by fashion and modeling but the way magazines celebrate fashion in this country is not right. Fashion is not jsut about clothes, shoes and bags. What about the aspect that will help our industry grow? So, FM&B is going to help with all that. The first edition will be talking about the problems facing the industry and it will be a first step in solving it. So, this is not about who is wearing what and to what occasion? We will be addressing all these problems and discussing modeling in details. We are quite ready and hopefully in March, the magazine will be launched. I don’t want a substandard good. I want something of high quality like Genevieve that’s what I’m working towards.

Sense of style
In a sense, there is a way modeling affects our sense of style. I’m just a regular jeans and top person. I won’t wear a skirt and bustier except it’s a very special occasion and I’m obliged to wear it. But in terms of poise and elegance, modeling has really helped me because if I step into a place without saying it people just know that I’m a model. There’s this aura about me especially because of the way I walk and carry myself. The way I walk on the run way it is a bit unique from the way others walk. So modeling has affected me in terms of poise and carriage but when it comes to fashion, I don’t like lace and all that heavy stuff. I’m just a jeans person and I like my jeans very stylish. It has become my style for I see style not as fashion but that unique thing about you. Somebody like Debbie Ogunjobi, her style is the low cut that she carries. Other will do it and may not look okay. It makes her unique and its good for her.

Life as a model
Despite the fact that I’m a model, I’m a home girl. When I’m not modeling, I’m at home. I once met a girl. She was 17 and so beautiful. I thought she had potential. She said she was interested in modeling but I had to talk to her mum. I told her that if we have a girl like her daughter in the pageant we might probably be producing the next Agbani Darego. Her mother said no, that she doesn’t like the lifestyles of models, movie stars and beauty queens. She was afraid she will mess around. I said to her that it is not about modeling but about what kind of person her daughter is. My mother for example knows I’m a decent person. Its not fair to generalise that if you go into modeling people will say all kinds of things about you. It’s a matter of personal discipline. For me modeling is a fun life, traveling with friends etc.

My choice
I’m more passionate about the runway, being on stage and wearing clothes. But in terms of remuneration photography is better. I’ve been paid N400,000 for a bill board that is still running but there’s more excitement on the runway. If I have to make a choice, I think I’ll choose photography because of the money. A lot of models lie about their fees. The highest fee I’ve received from fashion show was N50,000 from St Morits Style Slection. If anybody tells you other wise, they are lying. How many models have cars of their own? We need to start telling the truth so that people will know that our lives need to be improved.

Linda Ikeji: No regrets being a model

MODELING star, Linda Ikeji was relaxing with a friend five years ago when a radio jingle cut short their discussion. It was the SilverBird International Fashion Show jingles calling for application as a model.She and her friend debated whether to apply or not. Linda had just then been offered a university admission. It was thus a battle on the way forward for days.The love for the model job which has always arrested her attention from childhood, won the day.Indeed that timely decision has since shaped Linda’s modeling and entertainment career.

She was one of the models discovered during the show.Her name thereafter became synonymous with different brands.She is set to give back a part of what the society and modeling have offered her.She wants to be a publisher. In the next few weeks, her magazine Fashion Model and Beauty, will be on the newsstand.According to Linda, the eye-popping colour magazine is her contribution to the industry that launched her to fame and wealth.

She hopes the magazine will create a platform for international and local modeling and fashion markets to thrive. To the Imo indigene, the magazine “is a dream fulfilled” as she had always wanted to contribute to the fashion, modeling and beauty sectors.“This grand effort is a dream fulfilled as I have contemplated a long time ago of how to contribute my quota to the modeling industry”, she said.The glossy magazine will celebrate the nation’s topmost fashion designers, milliners, beauticians, photographers, style writers among others. It will be circulated in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Linda believes that the magazine will bridge the gap between Nigeria and UK in the areas of its focus. “This is geared towards keeping the two countries abreast of the current trend in each country”.Linda is optimistic that the magazine will add something new to Nigerian journalism. The glossy, colourful nature of the paper will create excitement in the industry. It promises aesthetic beauty and rich content to compete with papers in UK”, she said.

Embarking on such gigantic project of publishing such colourful paper will involve huge sums of money and lots of encouragement. Where are all these coming?According to her, several people have given her the push to soldier on. She recalled how she went through thick and thin to bring the vision to friction.“I never relented in working on the vision to achieve reality”.She confessed garnering sufficient experience to propel her to any height she seeks to attain.

Linda who said modeling is fun and excitement, stressed that the job has earned her respect among notable people across the world. the English graduate from the University of Lagos, who said she began modeling in her first year at the ivory tower, recalled how in the early years in the business, she received anonymous calls threatening her not to take one job or the other.She said her greatest assets are her pair of legs. Indeed, her legs have taken her to the highest pinnacle of a career, where straight, smooth legs are complements.

“Modeling is about having the right body make up to fit into the brand an advertiser wants to portray. You must fit that particular product, otherwise there will be a mismatch”. A daughter of Roman Catholic parents, Linda said her faith almost scuttled her desire to become a model. At the early stages, people in the church complained of the clothes she wore on stage, especially as some of the programmes were shown live on television. But she weathered the storm, believing that she was doing a job.

“My father gave me all the encouragement I needed, at the beginning, to forge ahead. My mother was not all that disposed to it. She had her reservations”Seven years on, she says one must be focused no matter the distraction.Linda had worked for top designers. Globalization of Beauty Makes Slimness Trendy

With no success, Nigeria had been sending contestants to the Miss World pageant for years. Winners of the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria went year after year to the Miss World competition, and year after year the beauty queens performed remarkably poorly.

Guy Murray-Bruce, the executive director of Silverbird Productions, which runs the Most Beautiful Girl contest, said he had almost resigned himself to the fact that black African women had little chance of winning an international competition in a world dominated by Western beauty ideals.

Then in 2000 he carried out a drastic change of strategy in picking the Most Beautiful Girl and Nigeria's next international representative.
"The judges had always looked for a local queen, someone they considered a beautiful African woman," Mr. Murray-Bruce, 38, said. "So I told the judges not to look for a local queen, but someone to represent us internationally."

The new strategy's success was immediate. The Most Beautiful Girl of 2001, Agbani Darego, went on to clinch the Miss World title in Sun City, South Africa, last October. She became the first African winner in the contest's 51-year history.

Her victory stunned Nigerians, whose country had earned a worldwide reputation for corruption and fraud. Now, all of a sudden, Nigeria was No. 1 in beautiful women. Ms. Darego, who was 18 at the time, instantly became a national heroine. But soon pride gave way to puzzlement. In a culture where Coca-Cola-bottle voluptuousness is celebrated and ample backsides and bosoms are considered ideals of female beauty, the new Miss World shared none of those attributes. She was 6 feet tall, stately and so, so skinny. She was, some said uncharitably, a white girl in black skin.

The perverse reality was that most Nigerians, especially those over 40, did not find the new Miss World particularly beautiful. The story does not end there, though. In the year since her victory, a social transformation has begun to take hold across this nation, Africa's most populous. The change is an example of the power of Western culture on a continent caught between tradition and modernity. Older Nigerians' views of beauty have not changed. But among young, fashionable Nigerians, voluptuousness is out and thin is in.

"After Agbani won, girls look up to me and ask me how to get slim," said Linda Ikeji, 22, an English major at the University of Lagos.
"Before, fat girls were the rave of the moment," said Ms. Ikeji, who is 5 feet 8, weighs 130 pounds and now finds work as a part-time model. "Some fat girls thought they had an advantage over me. But Agbani changed everything."

Here in Lagos, the commercial capital, the thin "It" girls are now called lepa, using a Yoruba word that means thin but that was not applied to people before. The lepa girl has had a popular song written about her, called simply "Lepa." Nigeria's booming film industry has capitalized on the trend by producing a movie, "Lepa Shandi"; the title means a girl as slim as a 20-naira bill. To anyone who has traveled across the continent, especially in West and Central Africa, the cultural shift is striking. In the United States slimness may be an ideal, but many ethnic groups in this region hold festivals celebrating big women. In Niger many women take livestock feed or vitamins to bulk up.

Among the Calabari people in southeastern Nigeria, fat has traditionally held a cherished place. Before their weddings, brides are sent to fattening farms, where their caretakers feed them huge amounts of food and massage them into rounder shapes. After weeks inside the fattening farms, the big brides are finally let out and paraded in the village square.

Ms. Darego, the same Miss World who has helped change young Nigerians' perception of beauty, belongs to the Calabari ethnic group — and thus may seem particularly unattractive to her own people. "If she was in a crowd of other African women, I wouldn't regard her as a beautiful woman," said Ken Calebs-Olumese, who does not belong to that ethnic group but, as the owner of the exclusive Coliseum nightclub here, knows beautiful women.
"The average African woman is robust, has big hips, a lot of bust," he said. "That's what she offers in terms of beauty. It's in our culture." Mr. Calebs-Olumese, who is 56, drew a blank at the mention of lepa. Still, he acknowledged that he was "speaking from my generation's perspective."

While the transformation in youthful tastes was linked to the Miss World victory, it started, some said, with an earlier event.

In 1998, M-Net, the South African network seen across Africa on satellite television, opened a search for the "Face of Africa." The winner was promised a three-year, $150,000 modeling contract with the Elite agency in New York. Not surprisingly, M-Net, which shows mostly American movies and TV shows, chose a skinny, 6-foot-2 teenager from Lagos, Oluchi Onweagba, who was not considered particularly pretty here but became a hit on the runways.
"That was the start," said Frank Osodi, 36, a fashion designer whose studio in the Surulere district in Lagos was a hive for models and beauty queens one recent morning. "Before, if you were thin, people thought you were sick, like an AIDS patient. Now if you have a skinny member in your family, you don't have to be ashamed."

Indeed, parents are now urging their daughters to take part in beauty pageants. In the past, the Most Beautiful Girl competition drew just enough contestants to hold a pageant, Mr. Murray-Bruce said. For the 2001 contest there were only 40; this year there were 400.

No one is predicting whether the youthful preference for thinness represents a fad or a lasting cultural change. But Maureen and Mary-Jane Mekowulu, slim 18-year-old twins who are students at the University of Nsukka in southeastern Nigeria and were visiting their parents here, said they would continue to exercise every morning and abstain from eating after 6 p.m.
"Because of Agbani, people have realized that slim is beautiful," Maureen said of the Miss World. And the Most Beautiful Girl of 2002 would reinforce that impression, said the contest's producer, Mr. Murray-Bruce. "She's even skinnier than Agbani," he said.

ZULU VIRGINS IN THE REGALIA OF THE REED DANCE.
I have put some countries in Africa as "No Go" Areas for me in order to maintain my chastity and retain my sanity, by keeping away from impressionable and vulnerable girls and women.

I am still in retreat on Bonny Island to escape from the sexual harassment of nubile maidens and young women in the villages, urban towns, and cities in Nigeria. And since January 1st, 1999, I have not slept with any girl or woman.

The invitations to come to South Africa have been turned down, because of the pornographic reports from my randy cousins and friends in South Africa on their sexual escapades among the native people. The recent news that the king of Swaziland just lifted the ban on sex for girls below 18 did not excite me. Why should girls under 18 be harassing their king to lift the ban on sex?

They said the young king who is 36 years old just added a new bride to his harem. And she is only 17. A virgin. So, he was compelled to lift the ban on sex.

I have always heard that South African girls are very sexy. And I am not surprised, because I have been informed since the 1970s when the celebrated "Ipi Tombi" of South Africa came to Nigeria for the FESTAC '77 and they were very sexy in their choreography. And when they left, my high school, the St. Gregory's College did the Nigerian adaptation of the "Ipi Tombi" musical with the selected school girls from the Holy Child College. The girls were naughty and made fun of me for not messing around with them. And when I wanted to organize my own dance troupe, 22 of the girls signed up and only 4 boys joined from my school.

I have to live like a monk to discourage the girls and women from coming. But, they kept on coming. There were over 30 girls coming to visit me. But, I only visited three of them after so much persuasion.

Beauty is one of my greatest attractions and having so many beautiful models as my friends and companions became the talk of the town until I fled to the Bonny Island. And even here in my retreat, two young women have found good excuses to visit me. But, I have not fallen for their temptations.

BACKGROUND
Once a year, in the heart of South Africa's Kingdom of the Zulu, thousands of people make the long journey to one of His Majesty’s, the King of the Zulu nation's royal residence at KwaNyokeni Palace. Here, in Nongoma, early every September month, young Zulu maidens will take part in a colourful cultural festival, the Royal Reed Dance festival - or Umkhosi woMhlanga in the Zulu language.

For visitors to KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa's most Popular tourist destination, the Reed Dance festival Offers the unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty and majesty of the Kingdom of the Zulu, combined with the vibrant spectacle of Zulu cultural life. The road to the Reed Dance festival runs north from the city of Durban, and winds through the green lushness of the North Coast sugar-belt, skirting through the Kingdom's world-renowed wildlife reserves of Zululand and Maputaland.

RITUAL CELEBRATION
The Reed Dance is also a celebration of the Zulu nation and performs the essential role of unifying nation and the king, who presides over the ceremony.

The festival takes its name from the riverbed reeds, which are the central focus of this four-day event. The reed-sticks are carried in a procession by thousands of young maidens who are invited to the King's palace each year. More than 10 000 maidens, from various communities throughout the province of KwaZulu- Natal, take part in the Reed Dance ceremony, with the rest of the Zulu nation helping them to celebrate their preparation for womanhood.

It is a great honour for the young women to be invited to take part in the Reed Dance ceremony, and its also a source of great dignity and pride for their families and communities.

According to Zulu traditon, only virgins are permitted to take part in the festival to ensure that they are ritually 'pure'.

COLOURFUL OCCASION
The Reed Dance festival is a solemn occasion for the young women, but also an opportunity to show off their singing, dancing and beadwork, the fruits of many months of excitement and preparation.

The women of KwaZulu-Natal make some of the finest beadwork in Africa, and the Reed Dance is an especially vibrant and colourful occasion on account of the rich beadwork on display. For visitors to the Reed Dance, this exquisite handiwork can provide a unique souvenir or gift to take home.

From each region in the Kingdom comes a distinctive craft tradition, and the colours, patterns and styles of the beadwork luxuriantly displayed by the young women, as both ornaments and clothing attest to the region of origin of the craftwork.

HANDING OVER THE REED
As the Reed Dance ceremony begins, the young women prepare to form a procession led by the chief princess. One of the daughters of the Zulu King is also the leader of the group of maidens as they go through this important rite of passage.

Each maiden carries a reed which has been cut by the riverbed and it symbolizes the power that is vested in nature. The reeds reflect a deep mythical connection with origin of the Zulu people, where, tradition tells us, the original ancestor emerged from a reed bed.

In everyday use, these reeds are the building material For the typical domed or beehive hut, iqhugwane, which is found particularly in rural homesteads throughout KwaZulu-Natal.

Zulu mythology has it that if a young woman who is not a virgin takes part in the Reed Dance ceremony, her reed will break and embarrass her in full public view!

And still, today an expectant hush falls on the crowd as the chief princess is the first to choose a reed. Shouts of joy and celebration greet her as the reed remains intact, and, with bated breath, each of the young women takes it in turn to choose a reed.

Accompanied by jubilant singing and dancing, the stately procession winds its way up the hill to the palace entrance where the king awaits, flanked by his royal regiment.

As leader of the group of young women, the chief Princess kneels down before the king and presents him with a reed to mark the occasion, before joining the young women in a joyful dance of tribute to the king.

21-year-old Olamide Elizabeth Adeyooye was last seen at Family Video in Normal around 9:00 p.m. Thursday, just three blocks away from her apartment.

Normal police detectives spent today searching her vacant apartment for clues.The college senior weighs 110 pounds and satnds about 5-foot-three-inches tall. She is of Nigerian descent and has shoulder length, natural black hair and dark eyes.

School officials say she drives a dark green 1996 Toyota Corolla with license plate LBG 927.

Nigeria Winning The War On Corruption

I am becoming convinced that President Olusegun Obasanjo is serious about the war on corruption and he is even ready to surrender himself for prosecution if found wanting as he said corruption has no immunity in Nigeria. And I love that.

As much as I have been very vocal in crying out against his questionable acts, I am also very vocal in approving the laudable acts of His Excellency President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria. The only credible legacy he can leave in Nigeria would not be his so called Presidential Library Project or his private university, but the solid foundation for the nation building of a New Nigeria where corruption would no longer be the toga of Nigeria.

Abuja - Nigeria's government under President Olusegun Obasanjo is making progress in fighting corruption, a senior World Bank official said on Thursday.

Daniel Kaufmann, head of global programmes at the World Bank Institute (WBI), made his remarks after a meeting with members of Obasanjo's economic team.

"Nigeria is changing for the better. In fact, if the current momentum is maintained and deepened, the progress made in the fight against corruption could become irreversible," Kaufmann said.

Obasanjo's specially appointed economic team has the responsibility to fashion the country's economic reform programme, which also includes chasing and repatriating Nigerian wealth stolen by past leaders and stashed in foreign banks.

'Historical turning point'

He cited improved accountability, integrity in the handling of public finances, reduction in the extent of bribery in some areas like taxation and public procurement, as some merits of Nigeria's economic reforms.

"This year and 2006 may prove to be historical turning point in Nigeria's anti-corruption efforts if resolute reforms in key areas are fully implemented," Kaufmann said.

His presentation relied on worldwide governance indicators issued periodically by the World Bank. Kaufmann heads the governance and anti-corruption desk at the WBI in Washington.

However, he said, Nigeria's private sector ethics were not improving.

"The notion that corruption is an exclusively public sector affair is a myth because it takes two to tango," he observed.

Kaufmann criticised foreign firms operating in Nigeria, saying they too were not free from unethical practices. - Sapa-dpa

WHAT IS AFRICAN BEAUTY?

Defining African beauty
We talk a lot about "African beauty", but what does that term signify? Dark skin, short virgin hair, big flat nose, big lips, full figure, big hips and backside – is this the true version of an African beauty? If you straighten your hair, put on hair extensions, are embarrassed by your flat nose, big lips and big butt – does that mean you're not proud of your African beauty?

Is it true that in this day and age we all subscribe to the popular concept of beauty that condemns plump, dark-skinned women? The recent Nokia Face of Africa pageant raised these important questions about African beauty. Face of Africa judge and TRUE LOVE editor Busi Mahlaba had this to say: "There's no beauty like African beauty - our skin tones, our figures and our shapes are distinct and unique in all of the world!" Busi believes African beauty is about the pride and dignity with which we wear our African identity on a daily basis by celebrating our shape, enhancing those features unique to us (such as our small waists and wider hips). She adds: "African beauty is reflecting who you are outwardly; it's embracing our cultures and traditions, and honouring them." She also maintains it's about being able to straddle the dual roles we women in Africa face today, expressing our traditional values and heritage while living and working in a totally Western world. One way of doing this is by introducing elements of our culture into the way we dress (such as combining a suit with a headgear of African beads).

Happy in our own skin? An article which appeared on June 29 this year in the Mail & Guardian by Cheri-Ann Janes and Malena Ammusa, entitled "Happy In Our Own Skin", claims that according to some men, every guy's dream of beauty is the "it" girl who's thin and fair-skinned. However, I'm sure we've all noticed the growing South African phenomenon of women liberating themselves from this conventional stereotype of beauty by being comfortable in their own skins. Gone are the days when African women were frowned upon because of their black skin, broad noses, curly hair, thick lips and big butts – now women with thin lips and no butts have resorted to plastic surgery to achieve these features! Beauty guru Leigh Tosselli has also gone on record as saying South Africans have come a long way in accepting and embracing African beauty. "We're starting to see a strong sense of ethnic identity – even South African models are starting to realise that they don't have to have hair extensions and blue contact lenses to be beautiful." Now, more than ever, what it means to be African and beautiful no longer depends on how well African women mimic Western aesthetic ideals. Popular Afro-centric hairstyles and fashion speak for themselves. We've become so comfortable with our natural attributes that our white sisters envy us for our beautiful, glowing, clear, wrinkle-free skins, our sparkling white teeth, our strong facial features and our inherently dignified postures!

BOOKSPLUS Nigeria Ltd has repackaged Bisi Ojediran's classic novel, Survival of the Beautiful. The novel, described by the author as his most original creative project, was first published in 1999. Peter Abel, journalist and protagonist in many of Ojediran's literary works made his first explosive appearance in Nigerian and global literary space in this composition.

Following its strong impact and its great potentials, the original 30,000-word novel has been rewritten completely and expanded for the international market with a beautiful cover that has Grace Amah of Nollywood fame as its model. Currently under a publishing deal with agents in the United States, the author said he has agreed with the agents for the release of a limited number in Nigeria, because in his words, "Maintaining relevance in Nigeria where I live, work, and write, is very important."

He also promises to be active on the local literary scene on retirement. He is sure the novel, which has been listed on the agent's website, will be published in the United States very soon.

In the classic novel, a Biology Professor is driven by beauty into a morbid experiment of breeding beautiful women in a remote, uncivilized village. The Professor, lost his beautiful wife in an automobile accident, but had exhumed her head to kiss every morning in a bizarre show of love and a tonic for his experiment. In the city of Lagos, Peter Abel, an ace investigative reporter who has the uncanny gift for writing delightful scoops, and celebrates each with a drinking binge, runs into an escapee from Price's village of beauty, Kiki, in a brothel.

Back in the city, the newspaper story of a heavily bruised Abel draws the attention of the government and Non-Governmental Organizations to begin a massive rehabilitation programme for the people. But he discovers after a long search that Kiki, who had waited endlessly for him, has returned to the village to look for him, triggering another search, this time for a dear one. The desperate search ends with the finding of a Kiki who has been charmed by the villagers into a vegetable, but Abel needed exactly the woman who made it possible for him to love women - nothing less.
